I never knew about the (possible) origins of this word - I’m thought it was a Bob Crumb coinage in that classic Zap comics cover (“Zap comics is squinty comics!”). This is a brilliant look-in to a side of the whole industry that the poohbahs of it exploited - the tried to pretend didn’t exist, along with the poor bastards doing the work for it all.
Most that saw that Zap cover over the years probably thought it was a Crumb coinage, learning the history makes one wonder if Crumb picked it up from an old timer like Woody Gelman or if it was still used in the '60s.
